Dr Paramothayan completed the Royal College of Physician's Educator's course in 2006 and the Masters in Medical Education in 2010. She was awarded a Clinical Teaching Bursary by the London Deanery in support of this training. She is a member of the Association for the study of Medical Education.
Teaching of undergraduates
Dr. Paramothayan is leading and managing change and improvement in Clinical Education. She has a strong commitment to teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates. At the undergraduate level she is involved in lecturing to medical students from St. George’s Medical School. She teaches clinical medicine to undergraduates doing the 5 year course and the Graduate Entry Programme (GEP) students. This includes weekly clinical teaching sessions which she has established at St. Helier University Hospital. She is an expert for Problem Based Learning (PBL) and teaches on the wards and in outpatient clinics. She offers and supervises students doing Special Study Modules (SSMs). She is the Foundation Year 1 Training Programme Director for the Trust.
Dr. Paramothayan sits on the interview panel at St. George’s Medical school responsible for selecting for medical school entry. She is also an examiner for final MBBS at St. George’s Medical School.
Teaching of postgraduates
Dr. Paramothayan has responsibility for teaching and supervising the junior doctors. She is a Clinical and Educational supervisor. As part of her work for The London Deanery she is involved in the recruitment of Junior doctors for Core Medical Training.
She has taught doctors taking the membership exam and on MRCP courses at Mayday Hospital and St. George’s Hospital. She helped to organise and run the MRCP examination at Mayday Hospital in June 1999. She has taught students doing the MSC and Diploma courses in Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Brompton Hospital.
She is a Royal College of Physician’s examiner for the Membership Examination (MRCP) and a committee member of the Specialty Question Writing Committee for the Respiratory Certificate Examinations, responsible for setting the exit examination for the Specialist Registrars. She has been elected a member of the British Thoracic Society Education and Training Committee (2010-2012). She is also a reviewer for the Higher Education Academy.
Medical Educational Research
Dr. Paramothayan has completed a research project entitled “Perception of graduate and non graduate medical students on effectiveness of problem based learning and lectures”. She has also carried out research into perception of medical students and doctors regarding professionalism in medicine.
